Preventive Dentistry and Routine Care

A common misconception is that regular dental appointments are “optional”. But did you know that the connection between oral health and total-body health is a proven fact? Taking care of your teeth can improve your overall health, not just the appearance of your smile.

Dr. Unger develops a long-term dental plan to maximize your overall well-being while beautifying your smile. Your customized plan will include the following:

X-rays: Dental x-rays can help the dentist locate cavities before they cause discomfort. These images are also useful in managing wisdom teeth, and in making orthodontic assessments. The amount of radiation in dental x-rays is very low and quite safe.

Cleanings: Regular professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing may miss. Cleaner teeth give you a more attractive smile and fresher breath. More importantly, a clean mouth means a reduced risk of gum disease and other complications.

Examinations: Your dentist will check the inside of your mouth—including your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, palate, and throat—for signs of disease or decay. The dental professional will also look at your face and neck to ensure there are no swellings or other abnormalities. The examination screens for not only cavities and gum disease but also abscesses, oral cancer, and other potential problems.

At-home hygiene: Dentures do not have to be inevitable. By establishing a long-term relationship with a dentist, you can receive personalized recommendations on how best to take care of your teeth and mouth. Ideally, dental care begins as soon as the first teeth erupt, but it is never too late to put your oral health into the hands of a professional.

Other: Additional options may include fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and protective mouth guards.

Special Dental Concerns

While some patients go for decades without so much as a cavity, others require care that goes beyond general dentistry. The combination of genetics, water quality, nutrition, oral hygiene, and unforeseen events determines whether you will need special dental attention.

Dr. Unger offers a number of cosmetic, restorative, and emergency services, including:

  • Fillings and root canal treatment.
  • Management of gingivitis, periodontitis, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome, sensitive teeth, and teeth grinding.
  • In-office and at-home teeth whitening.
  • Bonding and veneers.
  • Prosthetic teeth: crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants.
  • Diagnosis and management of dental or oral pain and discomfort.
  • Post-accident care.

If your condition requires a specialist, such as an endodontist, orthodontist, periodontist, or prosthodontist, the dentist will give you a referral and prepare you for your outside visit.
